Tennessee Nursing CE Requirements


Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) must complete any two (2) of the following continuing competence activities every two years:




  • Evidence of current national certification
  • Official transcript (may be student-issued) showing two hours of nursing credit
  • A written self-evaluation based on the standards of nursing competence outlined in the rules
  • Letter of satisfactory completion of a comprehensive nursing orientation program
  • Letter from a peer providing a satisfactory evaluation of your nursing performance
  • Copy of a contract renewal or re-appointment to a nursing position
  • Documentation from a school of nursing verifying participation in the education of nursing students
  • Five (5) contact hours of continuing education (or ten [10] hours if not currently practicing)
  • Copy of a published article relevant to nursing authored by the licensee
  • Letter of satisfactory completion of a nursing refresher course
  • A document identifying two nursing goals and the methods used to achieve them
  • A letter from an agency verifying volunteer service performed as a nurse
  • A copy of a satisfactory employer evaluation
  • Letter from a patient or family member attesting to a positive nurse–patient relationship
  • Evidence of successfully retaking the NCLEX examination
